Spinel

Spinel, a magnesium-aluminium oxide gemstone, appears in colours from red and pink to blue and purple. High-quality spinels from Myanmar, Sri Lanka, and Tanzania are valued for their brilliance. Many “rubies” in royal crown jewels were actually red spinels, mistaken for rubies for centuries.
